Seen Any Good Bands Lately?

And I don't mean big or even mildly-known bands, have you seen any struggling, no-account bands playing the toilet curcuit that you think we should all be supporting. And if not, why not?

oh there's always loads, the best bands are to be found down in the undergrowth playground - lots going on this week, Capillary Action tomorrow and Thursday in London - over here from new York and doing it all themselves, we're really excited about them being in town, I suspect they are a must see - haven't see nthem live yet though. Molloy tonight with their dirty filth glammy infectious electro pop, Tim and Sam's Tim and Sam band featuring Tim And Sam are really nice and enjoyable. This week's Organ demo of the week band The Contortionists sound good, Lamo from Stoke - Boy girl duo making enough noise for ten and very original, just put out their first single this week. Of course we don't understand why none of you are going on about Rude Mechanicals? Shrag are in town tomorrow as well, brilliant wrong pop from Brighton oh and Lime Headed Dog and aren't Susan George Booth playing this week? Too many good bands being ignored! Cursors of course, how was the gig this week (playing while we're on the radio shouldn't be allowed)

there's this one from the Organ gig guide, happening on Thursday, use the gig guide and you'll find all the links and what have you....

RECOMMENDED *** LIME HEADED DOG / TRASH KIT - a club ccVii event @ Jamboree, Cable Street Studios, E1 - "Lime Headed Dog is the bed that Joel Cox (ex of Good Shoes) has made for himself so he better lie in it and lie in it no matter who Lorenzo is and never mind how many bitches and glitches and gameshow chainsaws there are in there, get in to bed and hands above the covers. Microwaved and unlike anything that you can instantly put your finger on, he’ll run you out of here son, put up your wanted posters... Some kind of sophisticated lo-fi D.I.Y otherness with bangs and clanks and kfums and klufs and who knows what or where..." That's some of what we said in that single of the week Organ 291 review back in January... Don't just take our word for it though: 'Lime Headed Dog will have you hyperventilating' - DAZED AND CONFUSED. or In singer Joel Cox's words:- 'The future is making music unconstrained by commercial sensibilities, I hope. If you have your own recording equipment and the ability to release records yourself, nothing can go wrong, right?' from Plan B magazine.
The Club ccVii people say "Local gals Trash Kit live up to their name, bashing out the trashiest sound you're likely to hear on a thursday night in the east end.. unless you've stumbled into a better venue by mistake.... These three gals describe their music as Afrobeat but by the sounds of those guitars that's a dirty lie........ Verging between the sublime and the unlistenable, and with some supercool support slots coming up you wanna catch these three before everyone else does".
And all for just £2 entry... this is how we want it!

well Contortionists tonight were really good at The Legion. Went down there on the strength of their demo and they turned out to be just as good live, loads of personality, great frontman.. well recommended...

Here's the demo review

THE CONTORTIONISTS – Degenerate Music And The Evil Of Banality – They’re from East London and this CD burst in here demanding instant attention. Four live tracks that fall up your stairs and dig pointy elbows in to your ribs. More things to say, more wrong pop churning and new wave pointed things and and and.... The Fall, Art Brut, all awkwardly catchy and full of different angles, something a little more to say and play if you know what I mean. Suckerpunch grammatical errors, hail gross saints of the protest scene they said. Pointed male/female vocals (they all sound like Mark E Smith), four fine tracks that demand we go out and find out more straight away, things that demand we have more things to say (and things). Excellent, we love it when unexpected things like this turn up, collaborations, wires, conversations, degenerates indeed, there’s always another antidote to the evils of banality, this is the function of art is it not? Excellent, love it to bits – www.myspace.com/thecontortionists or www.contortionist-manifesto.com

and the gig was free to get in to, and as soon as they were finished a sprint from the Legion to the Old Blue Last for CAPILLARY ACTION.....

Now these people deserve everything.. they put out their album themselves, they get a DIY tour of the world together, they land in the UK AT 8.00AM, get on the tube from Heathrow, sleep in Hoxton Square with their equipment, play a gig at the Old Blue last tonight with no idea where they're going to sleep afterwards, just got in from helping them carry all their gear on the tube to crash at a squat in Notting Hill, so for just getting out there they deserve our support and people of London showing up, but hey on top of all that, they were excellent! Playing at Cross Kings tomorrow...

CAPILLARY ACTION / HAG / BAD GUYS @ The Old Blue Last - 39 Great Eastern St, EC2 - Those thrilling maximalists from New York known as Capillary Action are on their way to Europe, they hit the UK on March 18th for a show at the Old Blue Last in London, they take themselves all over the UK and end up back in London on April 4th before heading to mainland Europe, dates are still being pull together, so best check out their My Space, you’ll find some seriously progressively bendy other rock adventure there, one of the finest bands out there right now, serious brain food... "Thrilling maximalism that has me rubbing my hands with glee straight away. A whole album's worth of perversely complex, er, pop... that has chunks of different genres popping up unexpectedly like the good bits in a stew made of gourmet leftovers." - Organ Magazine Album of the Week back sometime last year, the review is here

Well seems like nobody much has seen any good new bands then... TOM ALLALONE And The 78s were great last night, free gig down at 93ft East, a whole mixed upbag of old school soul and even older school rock and roll with bite and more bite, Mr Allalone is a rather good front man - debut album out in a couple of month and a killer single at the start of April, weren't many there and besides One True Dog, no one else was playing anywhere in London last night,,, you all missed another good one...

Excellent, excellent set from japanese prog quartet Mono @ The Scala on thursday night. Floating melodies build to epic, guitar-thrashing crescendos, track times that make Mogwai feel like the Ramones and a crowd of appreciative fans added up to a brilliant night. Got to meet them briefly afterwards and they're truly nice people as well.
Unfortunately they're done with the UK for this tour, so you all missed out.

and here's a local band to get behind --
WIDOWS - www.myspace.com/widows

28/03/2009 20:00atProject Orange (for Sixxx Records)
43 St. Johns Hill, Clapham Junction, London, SW11 1TT
Cost: £3/5

I've seen them three or four times now and they are really hitting their stride - don't let the early recordings on myspace put you off. get up close to the stage and get involved

I saw Mono too a year or so ago in Glasgow, Lalor. Couldn't agree more! The songs were all reaching 10-15 minutes but you never got bored! Definitely recommend them to anyone!
